Keep Going.

Long ago, there was a wise man who lived in a village.

One day, a woman came to see the wise man to stress her concerns about the pending war with the neighboring village. She said to him, “I am afraid I will lose my son in this war. He is my only son, but because he is of age, he will be forced to fight in battle. I cannot shake the feeling that he will lose his life. This is bad.”

The wise man pondered for a second, and then said to the woman… “We will see.”

Not knowing what to say to his response, she said nothing in return and left, angrily.

That same day, while roughhousing with some other boys, her son suffered the unfortunate event of breaking his leg. After tending to his injury, the woman hurried back to the wise man and vented to him, “My son will not be able to go off to war now because he has hurt himself to the point where he cannot walk, and if he cannot walk, then he cannot fight. This is good!

As he did before, the wise man sat with his thoughts for a few moments and then replied… “We will see.”

Later that night, intruders broke into the woman’s tent, and due to her son’s broken leg, he could not help his mother stop the thieves from stealing what little food and water they possessed. Along with stealing food and water, they also took a precious garment which had been in her family for generations. In tears and distraught, the woman traveled to the wise man again to tell him what had happened. “Woe is me and my fate, for my son and I have been pillaged and now we have nothing. I am truly cursed by the Gods themselves.”

With warmth and the utmost sincerity, the wise man gently proclaimed to the woman, “We will see.”

The following day, news came to the village. It was said, “The intruders from last night have been captured and killed in the opposing village for trying to attempt more of their devious acts. When the elders of the village went through the thieves’ possessions, they found a marked garment in which they believed to be a sign from their God. Due to this omen, they have decided against the war with us and have agreed to discuss plans of peace with our leaders.”

Elated with the recent development, the woman returned to the wise man once more. “Have you heard, there will be no war! Finally, our village will have peace, and all of our sons will live to see old age. By my faith, what I thought to be such a horrible thing was truly a blessing in disguise!

The wise man lifted his head from his book, looked at the woman with a slight smile and began to speak, but before he could utter a word, the woman quickly asserted, “I know, I know…we’ll see.”

Right now, everyone has counted you out. Everyone has written you off. Right now, everyone says you’re a loser and right now, they might be right. You say to yourself, “What was I thinking believing I could do this…I’m too old, I’m too ugly, I’m too dumb, I’m too far behind, I’m too…whatever.” Right now, they laugh at you, ignore you, discourage you, and you feel like giving up. Right now, it looks like the bottom will forever be your home, but I say to you, and to everyone who has ever doubted you…WE’LL SEE.

Keep Going.
