The Movie Maker

Last Saturday, I rented an electric scooter and rode around downtown Houston with a homeboy of mine who I’ve known for over twenty years. My 41-year-old grown ass friend, believed it to be a good idea, to pop fuckin’ wheelies… on a borrowed scooter… within minutes of the purchase. Needless to say, he bust his ass and face planted into the hard concrete ground, not once… but twice. He injured himself so badly that when we returned home his wife had to apply bandages to his wounds. Could he have prevented this? Absolutely. Did he learn from his carelessness? Did he say to himself, “Maybe moving forward in life I shouldn’t be an idiot?” Absolutely not. Why am I telling you this? Because it has occurred to me that the majority of people in this world are IN the movie, and then there is the few of us who are burdened with the task, of MAKING the movie…

Let’s Go 2 Work!

What do I mean by saying most people are in the movie?

When you are watching a motion picture, the characters themselves are unaware they are in a film. They have no clue that they’re in a horror flick or a suspense thriller, they’re just… living their lives. Most people are characters. The real world and its intricacies is nonexistent to them. Their arrogance and laziness cripple their ability to think for themselves and they will never question the inception of what they hear or see. These characters, is what society calls… “normal.”

And then, there are the few. The few, who are conscious of how the movie is actually made and can see the picture for what it is. They know that behind the scenes there lies edits, actors who take multiple takes to deliver their lines, numerous directors, screenwriters, camera operators, and so forth. They know this because they are movie makers. In life, they are the ones who produce so that the many can consume. They stay awake so that the normal can sleep. They, the movie makers…run the world.

If you are a movie maker, do not envy the “normal” and do not concern yourself with their fortunes and misfortunes. They are merely EXTRAS on the movie set of life and have no say in the script that dictates their being. LEAN into the movie maker that you are. Utilize EVERYTHING that happens to you and EVERYTHING that’s around you, for these things have been placed before you to use as raw materials for purpose.

I know you didn’t ask for this…neither did I. I too once wished I could just be a naive character. This is not our lot in life. It is the ones who are different that makes the difference in this world, and it is the small number of movie makers who affords the majority… normalcy.

Don’t go with the flow, be the flow, and witness the Oscar go…to you.
