The Hero’s Journey is a template used in literature and many fictional movies that involves a hero who goes on an adventure. Movies like ‘The Lion king’, ‘John Wick’, and my favorite, ‘The Matrix’, have all used this format.
A Hero’s Journey typically goes as the following…
Character is challenged and called to an adventure, leaves behind known world and ventures to the unknown, goes through various tests and trials, allies come along to assist hero overcome obstacles, confrontation with major enemy and/or obstacle, character returns home transformed.
I don’t know you… but I know you. You are always comparing yourself to others. You go to the gym and instead of focusing on your workout, you are focusing on men who are in better shape than you. Your compare the car you drive, your girl, your house, your career and the money that you make, your looks, your height, other people’s relationships, other people’s happiness and good fortune. I know this about you because I too have done this. The question is, WHY do we do this?
You are constantly comparing yourself because you don’t have MAIN CHARACTER ENERGY.
Main Character Energy simply means to act like, walk like, talk like, and think like the only thing that matters, the only thing that’s important, is… YOU.
When you are watching a movie, there are hundreds of extras doing random things throughout the film. There are also dozens of supporting characters that help move the story along. Not once have you watched a Denzel Washington picture and ever cared about the journey of the extras. Not once have you watched a Leonardo Dicaprio movie or a Brad Pitt flick and contemplated about the journey of their supporting actors. The only fuckin’ journey that matters is that of the MAIN character.
Your brother gets more women than you, what does that have to do with the main character?
Your friends are further along in life than you, what does that have to do with the main character?
Your business venture is not doing as well as other businesses in the same field, again I ask, what does that have to do with the main character?
All that that matters is YOUR Hero’s Journey. What is YOUR call to adventure, what unknown world will YOU venture to, what are the tests and trials that YOU will overcome and who are YOUR allies that will assist YOU, when will YOU confront YOUR major enemy, how will YOU return home transformed by YOUR experiences?
From this day on, I don’t care if you are at home or simply going up the street to the gas station, all day long, start giving the world your Main Character Energy. The movie of your life stars YOU, everybody else… can get fucked.
